Pre and Post Natal Pilates

This qualification recognises the skills, knowledge and competence required of an individual to work in an unsupervised capacity, covering the considerations for safe and effective exercise as well as how to plan and adapt exercise programmes for pre and post natal clients.

Course Outline

This qualification comprises two units and approximately 45 learning hours. Candidates are expected to complete both units successfully to gain certification.

Entry Requirements

Candidates must have a Level 3 certificate in Pilates matwork or equivalent and a current First Aid certificate.

Qualification Overview

Candidates will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the following broad areas;
  • Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment
  • Exercise programme design for pre and post natal clients
  • Delivering a Pilates teaching session for pre and post natal clients


Assessment 1 - Written Theory Test (30 questions) 25% of qualification

Complete a written theory test to demonstrate underpinning knowledge of;

  • Anatomical and physiological changes associated with the pregnancy to include; affecting the bones and joints, muscles, cardio respiratory/vascular systems, nervous system, gastro-intestinal system and urinary system
  • Practical implications of physiology changes during second and third trimesters to the session components

Assessment 2 - Case Study 25% of qualification

Complete a written case study to demonstrate ability to apply underpinning knowledge to a practical case by;

  • Explaining screening procedures (PARQ/informed consent/medical referral procedures)
  • Providing appropriate exercise and lifestyle advice to meet the clients wants and needs
  • Adaptations to the programme during each trimester
  • Appropriate postnatal advice
  • Advice regarding specific exercise programmes

Assessment 3 - Written Assessment 50% of the qualification

Plan a safe and effective functional Training session;

Plan a 45 minute safe and effective pre-natal exercise session for an antenatal woman.

Written plans should;

  • List the exercises to be used in sequential order for all components of the session
  • List the coaching points for each exercise in all components of the session
  • List the adaptations, progressions or alternative exercises to cater for different needs for all components of the session
  • Meet all criteria on the observation checklist
